Ayrshire is world famous for its golf courses and it boasts three Open Championship courses The Ailsa at Turnberry, Prestwick and Royal Troon and it was recently announced that The Open Championship will indeed return to Ayrshire at Turnberry in 2009.

It will be the fourth time Turnberry has hosted The Open. The venue is famous for the 1977 Duel in the Sun between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. With the sea by your side and that famous lighthouse in the distance, there are few courses in the world that can match Turnberry for beauty or excitement. Scene of some of the most memorable moments in Open history, the Ailsa championship course is a legend in the world game. Watson, Norman, Price;they’ve all won golf’s most coveted trophy here on the Turnberry links. And another name will join them in the summer of 2009 when the Open returns to the Ailsa. But it’s not only the world’s best that can enjoy a round here. Every year, thousands of golfers of all abilities enjoy the thrill of playing an Open Championship course that’s open to all.

In addition there are a host of quality links courses such as Kilmarnock Barassie, Glasgow Gailes, Western Gailes, The Dundonald, Irvine Bogside, West Kilbride, the Turnberry Kintyre and Prestwick St Nicholas.

In Ayr and Troon you'll find three of the best muncipal courses in the country at Lochgreen and Darley and  Belleisle in addition there are other additional public golf courses run by the local councils the length of the county.

Other inland courses also provide a challenge including the excellent Brunston Castle near Turnberry or Loudoun Gowf Club just outside Kilmarnock. Prestwick also has a third course, the inland layour at St Cuthbert's.
